On day 50 of my Everyday Cathedrals project I wrote about a man who planted flowers along a bike path. I hadn’t seen him in months. This afternoon as I started my run I met him. His name is Frank.
I asked him what moved him to plant those flowers. He said “I just wanted to make the path look nicer.” Then he said “People seem to really like them and I enjoy it.”
His diligence and consistency is admirable. I have to fight the urge to over spiritualize this but one thing is clear, Frank’s gift of planting flowers along a running path has had a greater impact on me than he probably every imagined his flowers would have on anyone.
My Everyday Cathedral today was the reminder that even small gestures can make a huge impact on others. Even if it doesn’t seem like your actions are making a difference they might indeed be making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
In a world that at times feels darker than the night, we are invited to shine like stars.
